Neuropathy Care in
St. Petersburg

It’s estimated that over 20 million people in the US suffer from neuropathy, which is damage to the peripheral nerves. This is a condition in which the nerves that connect the body to the brain and spinal cord become damaged or diseased. This damage can lead to a range of symptoms, such as pain, numbness, tingling or burning sensations in the hands and feet.

What Are the Primary Causes?

Many things can cause the nerves to become damaged, including injuries related to auto accidents, infections, and exposure to toxins.

Diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common causes. When you have high blood sugar, the body’s nerves can be damaged by decreased blood flow. Over time, when you have diabetic neuropathy, it starts affecting the nerves, and you can start having numbness, tingling and burning in your hands and feet. Those with diabetes have an increased risk of developing gangrene (including gas gangrene), which in severe cases can require amputation.

How Near Infrared Therapy Can Help

To help patients with neuropathy, we use Near Infrared Therapy (NIR) at Welcome Home Family Chiropractic & Wellness Center. This emerging treatment has been shown to provide significant relief from chronic neuropathy.

How Does It Work?

NIR therapy uses light energy from a special device to penetrate the skin. The light activates the mitochondria, which causes it to release ATP, also known as energy. With the release of energy and nitric oxide (a vasodilator), the blood vessels dilate to increase the healing process. The process brings more oxygen and nutrients into the cells, stimulating the damaged nerve endings, so they can regenerate and heal.

During a session, the therapy works by delivering noninvasive, pulsed infrared energy to the affected area. We apply the light to a patient for about 20-30 minutes. According to research it will take about 8-12 weeks to get a good response. Once the nerves start stimulating, the patient starts feeling less tingling and numbness, and less pain in the hands and feet.
